End of Summer

It's Labor Day weekend and so ends the summer.  But, here in the south I don't expect the heat will quit anytime soon.  That's a good thing though, because we actually put up one of those PVC pools this year.  And there's nothing Grandma likes more than a refreshing dip in the pool after a long day.  Today is definitely going to be one of those days...  I'm already looking forward to relaxing and playing in the pool with the grandkids.

Item of the Day
Thursday was opening day for College football so today's item is for all you football fans.  This decorative yet practical item is made by Lisa West owner and designer at LSL Designs.  This Gamecock cutlery caddy is great for picnics, tailgating, or just about any time and is priced at $17.50.  Lisa also does other items with college team designs.

Another Step

It seems that every day it's some new idea or inspiration for me.  Today we set up a Meet Up group for our vendors and customers called Midlands Art and Craft Enthusiasts.   I'm always looking for new ways to reach out and let the public know we're here.  As a small business with a limited budget we need to use whatever we can to help us grow and to help our vendors succeed.  I'm doing my best to make sure that the community is aware of our business and what we do here.  But sometimes I think I could use a clone or two to help me out.  That reminded me of the Michael Keaton movie Multiplicity where one personality trait was prominent in each of the clones.
Well, maybe cloning isn't such a good idea.
Anyway, that reminded me of my Dad who used to define himself as a "Jack of all trades - master of none."  I think most of us crafters feel the same way about ourselves.  At least I think we all like to try new things and explore new craft options and just think outside of the box in general.  I wish there was a better title for those of us who tinker at a lot of crafts ...someday I may invent one.
But today we're looking at the artists that are represented in the store.  As I look around there is such a diversity in both medium and style.  We are so lucky to have so many talented people here.

Item of the Day
Today's item hangs on the wall direct across from where I sit and work on the computer and make sales, so I am fortunate to have it in clear view, and I love looking at it.
This exciting and vibrant painting by Cheryl Reynolds is done in watercolor and pastels.  It is beautifully framed under glass and sells for $175.   You can learn more about Cheryl and her work at her website Visionary Art by Cheryl Reynolds.

Calling all Crafters

We've put the call out several times now for local artists and crafters but we still have not reach maximum capacity in the store.  So, if you happen to be local and are interested in selling your work please stop in the store and talk to us about renting space.
One of the things I've mentioned while looking for vendors is that we don't have any woodworkers in here yet.  Since I used to cut out and paint yard signs and small wood pieces I made a deal with Grandpa.  If he cuts them out I'll paint them.  Of course that means he needs to get a scroll saw and learn how to use it.  He's been practicing and we have our first collaborative pieces available for sale.
Wooden Apple Memo Holder
He was so pleased with the finished product he's been cutting different shapes for me all day.  I have a feeling I may have created a monster ... I hope I'll be able to keep up with him!

Item of the Day
I wish we had some way of letting you smell today's item of the day.  These all natural soy candles are made by Michelle Brayboy of Country Creations by Cupid.

New Feature on the Blog

Calendar of Events
We've added a calendar to the blog so we can keep you updated on our special events, activities, and classes.  We currently have 2 "Pinterest Party" classes scheduled for September and will continue holding these on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.   Our first class will be September 10th and we'll be working on these beautiful pumpkin wine glass candle holders.  These are just the samples we've prepared for the class.  We'll post pictures of all of the works of art created by our participants after the class.

Our second class will be September 24th and we'll be working on a burlap wreath with a "faux" leather initial or symbol of choice.

More information is available at the store about these classes.

Item of the Day
We are delighted to carry the beautiful pottery work of Christy Brasington in the store.  Christy holds the distinction of being the crafter of the first item sold in the store...Yay Christy!    We absolutely adore this piece she has recently brought into the store.  This beautiful birdhouse with its leaf roof and friendly lizard visitor priced at $25.00 is just one example of her work.  Any bird would be proud to call this home.

Something new at Grandma's House

I decided to add a new album on our facebook page called Something New at Grandma's House.  It was a toss up between that and Item of the Day.  So, since I'm using the something new on facebook I'll be doing the item of the day here.  With so many items in the store it's almost hard to pick just one each day but I'll try.

Today's Item of the Day

Well two items, but I think they count as one...two sides of the coin kind of thing.  Anyone in South Carolina will understand, for those of you that don't this is about the college rivalry of Clemson (Tigers) and University of South Carolina (Gamecocks).  They take their college football seriously down here ... and start them pretty young.  These soft terry cloth bibs are embroidered by Betsy Dodds and very reasonably priced at just $5.00 each.  Other sayings and designs are also available, and Betsy will also do custom embroidery work.

Past, Present, and Future

Well, we've been in business for just a little over a month now and I'm still optimistic about our future.  Figured it was about time though to connect a blog with all of our other online faces.  You can find us on Facebook at Grandma's House or at our webpage grandmashousesc.com.  We also have Twitter account set up for Grandma, a Google+ account associated with our email grandmashouse13@gmail.com.  I must admit though that I don't really know much about using either the Twitter or Google+ accounts so your best bet if you're looking for me is Facebook.  Oh and I can't forget Pinterest, where you'll find us as: you guessed it - Grandmas House.
We opened the doors on July 8th with about 2 dozen artists and crafters, after two months of hard work getting the store in shape.  The before and after pictures are posted on our Facebook page and I still can't believe the difference.  Since then we have added more vendors, more displays, and lots more merchandise.  Almost everyday we're seeing something new.
But, we're not stopping at just new vendors and new merchandise.  We're currently making plans to offer classes and other presentations by our staff as well as some of our very talented artists and crafters.
So, keep your eye on our blog for our calendar and other news from Grandma's House.
